Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will my images get?
Photos usually shrink by 50–80% at the default quality, with little visible difference. PNG images are reduced to a compact 256-color palette, which often saves 60–70%. Images that are already well optimized are left unchanged.
Which quality should I choose?
80% is a good balance for the web. Go down to 60–70% for the smallest files, or up to 90% if you need to keep every detail.
Are location and camera details removed?
Yes. Compressed images are re-encoded, which drops EXIF data such as GPS location and camera model. The orientation of the photo is kept.
What happens to animated GIFs and SVG files?
They are returned unchanged: compressing a GIF here would flatten its animation, and SVG files are already small vector data.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The work happens inside your browser on your own device, so private documents stay private. You can check this in your browser’s network panel.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit. Very large files need a lot of memory, so on an older phone a smaller file works best.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It runs in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari.
