Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will my PDF get?
That depends on what is inside. PDFs made of scans or photos often shrink by 50 to 90%. PDFs that are mostly text are small already and may barely change. If nothing can be saved, you get your original file back and are told so.
Which level should I choose?
Start with Recommended. Choose Less compression when the pictures must stay as sharp as possible, and Extreme when the file has to be as small as possible, for example to fit an upload limit.
Can I still select and search the text afterwards?
Yes, with Less compression and Recommended: only the pictures are changed. With Extreme you can choose to turn every page into an image. That gives the smallest files, but the text can then no longer be selected or searched.
Are passwords and signatures kept?
No. To compress a protected PDF you enter its password, and the result has no password: use Protect PDF afterwards to add one. Compressing also changes the file, so digital signatures in it stop being valid.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The work happens inside your browser on your own device, so private documents stay private. You can check this in your browser’s network panel.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit. Very large files need a lot of memory, so on an older phone a smaller file works best.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It runs in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari.
