Frequently asked questions

Why is there no text in my file?

Scanned PDFs and photographed pages contain pictures of text, not text. This tool reads only the text that is really stored in the PDF, and it cannot recognize letters in pictures (OCR).

Will the layout be kept?

Lines, paragraphs and simple tables are kept, but a plain text file cannot hold fonts, pictures or exact positions. Pages with several columns are read column by column.

Which encoding does the text file use?

UTF-8, so accents and non-Latin scripts are saved correctly. Any modern text editor can open it.

Can I extract the text of a password-protected PDF?

Yes, as soon as you have entered its password. The password is only used in your browser.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The work happens inside your browser on your own device, so private documents stay private. You can check this in your browser’s network panel.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no fixed limit. Very large files need a lot of memory, so on an older phone a smaller file works best.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It runs in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari.
