How strong is the protection?
The PDF is encrypted with AES-256, the strongest encryption that the PDF format offers. What matters most is a long password that is hard to guess.
What if I forget the password?
It cannot be recovered. Nobody can open the file without the password, and we never see it. Keep an unprotected copy of your original file in a safe place.
What do the permissions do?
They ask PDF programs to block printing, copying or editing. Most programs follow them, but some ignore them, so treat them as a request. The password is what really protects the file.
Is my password sent anywhere?
No. The file is encrypted in your browser, so neither the document nor the password ever leaves your device.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The work happens inside your browser on your own device, so private documents stay private. You can check this in your browser’s network panel.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit. Very large files need a lot of memory, so on an older phone a smaller file works best.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It runs in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari.
